Why are you part of AFCWA?
Thirty-Five years ago I married a man whose passion was to minister to young men using football as his platform. My husband was 24 years old when he accepted his first Head Coaching position at our alma mater. For the next 27 years, we spoke into the hearts and lives of athletes and coaching staff as their collegiate HC and family. It
wasn’t all sunshine and roses that’s for sure. I never had the opportunity to be mentored by a head coach’s wife and didn’t know what to expect, often feeling no one understood or supported us. Then in 2009, our Defensive Coordinator introduced me to AFCWA. While attending my first convention with his wife, I found AFCWA’s mission of promoting camaraderie, offering support, and the providing of information to be what I had been searching for. During this, my second term on your Board of Directors I hope to be the ear that listens (and understands the highs and lows). The mouth that offers suggestions and support (been there done that, “You Go Girl!”). And finally, feet to walk alongside you (sometimes our families and friends don’t get it). I was fortunate to have found all those blessings and friendships in my mentors, the AFWA Trustees and previous Board of Directors.
What is your favorite AFCWA memory?
When I started attending conventions I would take pictures for my scrapbook. One year before serving on the Board of Directors myself, I was asked to take group pictures of the Trustees, Board of Directors, and their special guest Coach Lou Holtz. I’m not gonna lie I was a bit starstruck and asked Coach if he would mind taking a photograph with me for bragging rights. As we stood side by side I proceeded to put my arm around him. Our arms got tangled behind his back and I goosed him! Being a good sport he said with a grin, “That’s the best goose I've had since Christmas dinner!”
